Abstract

This study examines the relationship between Character strengths & virtues (CSV) and job satisfaction, organisational commitment and well-being of the employees at work.
The Character strengths and virtues (CSV) describes and classifies strengths and virtues that enable human thriving (Seligman et al, 2005) .This measure is derived from a table created which is a classification of 6 virtues and 24 character strengths by Peterson and Seligman (2004).This 24 item measure looks into the six main dimensions of virtue and also taps into the division of the virtues into the character strengths.

Job satisfaction is extremely relevant to this study since it is one of the reactions to the character strengths and virtues so it had to be measured. Cook & Wall (1980) developed this job satisfaction measure which is a 16 item scale and it measures both the intrinsic and extrinsic job satisfaction.

Cook & Wall (1980) also developed an 18- item scale to measure organisational commitment which was used in the study as well.

Job related anxiety; depression, contentment and enthusiasm were measured using the 12- items anxiety- contentment and depression- enthusiasm scales developed by Warr (1990).
Data was collected from 32 participants who were currently and formerly employed within the U.K.  A regression analysis revealed that Character Strengths and Virtues (CSV) has a positive correlation with the levels of job satisfaction, organisational commitment and well-being of the employees. Implications of these findings are considered from both organisational and theoretical perspective. Future research ideas along with the limitations of the study are discussed.
